El águila y la zorra ( The eagle and the fox)


Buenos días chicos,

I hope all of you are doing fine and doing spanish work on time. 

In case if anyone is not able to understand anything, you can always reach out to me on my phone or email. But keep doing your work on time. As we do not know how long the lockdown will continue. I do not want you to have a heavy load on your head when the school open. So all of you, keep doing your work on time. 

Today we are going to read a short fable by a very famous Greek author called Aesop.

I have written the translation in English as well. But when you read the story, do remember to note down the nouns and verbs that you do not know separately. 

And in the end you will have some questions from the text for your HW. 

You do not have to write the whole story in you notebook. You can take the print out and staple it in you notebook. Homework is to be done in your notebook. Apart from this, I am sharing a Spanish Newspaper ( BBC Mundo) link in this blog for you to read regularly and build your vocab.

               El águila y la zorra


Before you start reading the story, I want you to know a little about the author and his idea behind writing Fable. 

Author's Biography

The life of Aesop is a bit of a mystery. There is even some debate if Aesop was an actual person or just a name used by another writer. However, there have been mentions of Aesop in Greek history, which has allowed historians to piece together a biography (if it is true that he exists). Many of the stories about Aesop contain mythical interventions and legends. 
Aesop is credited with more than six hundred fables. 
Aesop is believed to have been alive from 620 to 560 BC. It was believed that he was a slave, but was given his freedom because of his literacy and storytelling. He is also described with many physical deformities and a speech impediment that was healed by a deity. Aesop was said to have escaped punishment many times throughout his life, often standing up to his accusers and telling a story that showed the irony or the characteristics of those punishing him. His death is just as much of a mystery as his life. It is believed that he stole a gold or silver cup and was violently put to death by being thrown off a cliff. 
Although Aesop is mentioned in Greek history, particularly by Greek historian Herodotus and Aristotle, many scholars do not believe that he actually existed. There is simply just not enough proof to confirm that he was alive. 

Fables and Morals

Fables are short stories that teach a moral, or lesson, to children. The stories are often funny, and the themes are easy for children to understand. The characters of fables are usually animals who act and talk like people but still have animal traits. The fables tell a story and end with a moral or lesson.

El águila y la zorra

Un águila y una zorra que eran muy amigas decidieron vivir juntas con la idea de que eso afianzaría su amistad.

[An eagle and a fox who were very close friends decided to live together with the idea that this would strengthen their friendship.]


El águila escogió un árbol muy elevado para poner allí sus huevos, mientras que la zorra soltó a sus hijos bajo unas zarzas sobre la tierra al pie del mismo árbol.

[The eagle chose a very high tree to lay its eggs there, while the fox released her children under brambles on the ground at the foot of the same tree.]


Un día que la zorra salió a buscar su comida, el águila, que estaba hambrienta cayó sobre las zarzas, se llevó a los zorruelos, y entonces ella y sus crías se regocijaron con un banquete.

[One day the fox went out to get her food, the hungry eagle fell on the brambles, took the foxes away, and then she and her young rejoiced at a feast.]


Regresó la zorra y más le dolió el no poder vengarse, que saber de la muerte de sus pequeños. 
¿Cómo podría ella, siendo un animal terrestre, sin poder volar, perseguir a uno que vuela? Tuvo que conformarse con el usual consuelo de los débiles e impotentes: maldecir desde lo lejos a su enemigo.

The fox returned and it hurt her more not being able to take revenge, than to know about the death of her little ones.
How could she, being a land animal, unable to fly, chase one that flies? He had to settle for the usual consolation of the weak and powerless: cursing his enemy from afar.]


Mas no pasó mucho tiempo para que el águila recibiera el pago de su traición contra la amistad.
Se encontraban en el campo unos pastores sacrificando una cabra; cayó el águila sobre ella y se llevó una víscera que aún conservaba fuego, colocándola en su nido.

But it did not take long for the eagle to receive payment for its treason against friendship.
Shepherds were in the field slaughtering a goat; The eagle fell on her and took a viscera that still had fire, placing her in her nest.]


Vino un fuerte viento y transmitió el fuego a las pajas, ardiendo también sus pequeños aguiluchos, que por pequeños aún no sabían volar, los cuales cayeron al suelo.
A strong wind came and transmitted the fire to the straws, also burning their little eaglets, that even when they were small they did not know how to fly, which fell to the ground.]

Corrió entonces la zorra, y tranquilamente devoró a todos los aguiluchos ante los ojos de su enemiga.
[Then the fox ran, and calmly devoured all the eaglets before the eyes of her enemy.]

Moraleja:
Nunca traiciones la amistad sincera, pues si lo hicieras, tarde o temprano del cielo llegará el castigo.
